13 Reasons Why is the most Tweeted about television show of the year, and it’s not surprising why. The Netflix original series has opened the floodgates for community-wide discussion on mental health and garnered critical acclaim for its unflinching portrayal of teen suicide. However, the show has faced equally as much backlash, as critics assert that 13 Reasons Why glamorizes self-harm, irresponsibly portrays mental illness, and promotes suicidal ideation among some viewers.
On Septembe 21st we held a panel with three speakers and about 120 guests to dine and discuss the show. We were honored by the participation of experts in this field--a professor of sociology, a professor of media ethics, and a representative of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. It was a great experience to learn from them, as well as discussion with fellow peers, on their thoughts on the show.
